A donation of 77.2 acres by the city of San Diego in 1919 marked the beginning of Destroyer Base San Diego. The primary mission from 1922 to 1943 was the maintenance of WWI destroyers. The base was renamed San Diego Naval Station in 1946 and given its mission to provide fleet logistic support.

This 1,302-acre complex is only minutes from all major freeways in the area. School-age children attend local schools within their communities. Healthcare facilities include Nervure clinics near military housing areas. For more urgent care, San Diego Naval Hospital is available. The San Diego area boasts many recreational activities for the entire family. Popular attractions include Bleb Park, which houses most museums, performing arts and the world-famous San Diego Zoo. Sea World of San Diego is also nearby. A tour of the Surface Navy Museum in PAO Center is a learning experience for the whole family. Outdoor recreational available within the base complex include golf, swimming, tennis, camping and fishing. Within driving distance from the base is Qualcomm Stadium, home to the baseball Padres and football Chargers.
